The idea was for an attractive shop assistant to make an emotional plea to find the man who left a jacket in a cafe. The intrigue created by this YouTube video caused a huge stir in the Australian media, with a national hunt being launched to find this mystery man; a modern day Cinderella story.

But the creators didn’t count on eagled eyed fashion watchers spotting the similarity between the lovelorn woman and the model in the recent Spring/Summer campaign on fashion brand Witchery’s website. Two days ago a Witchery spokeswoman said that the likeness was purely coincidental.

But as the story started to unravel ‘Heidi Clark’ (real name Lily) admitted yesterday that the plea was a fake, in another video posted on YouTube. Its real intention was to be a promotion for Witchery’s new men’s clothing line.

Despite complaints from deceived Internet users Naked Communications, the brains behind the elaborate viral hoax, strongly defended the use of social media sites in this way.

“I think a brand crosses the line when it’s harmful, and nobody’s been harmed in this,” Adam Ferrier, a partner with the company, said.

Witchery menswear are less impressed with the outcome. Currently they have declined to make any comment.

Lily said last week “I’m quite overwhelmed by all the attention. I never intended for things to get so big,”.

So far the initial appeal has received more than 165,000 views but the confession only 24.000. That leaves many men out there still believing they might have been the one wearing the jacket that day in the cafe!

Dolce & Gabbana have opened the Milan fashion week with a show of standard black, greys and whites interspersed with explosions of fuschia and pink.

The famous Italian designers reverted to brand’s origins for their Menswear Autumn/Winter 2009/2010 line, “with a black and white portrait of Sicily, revisiting all the hues from baroque to neorealism to aristocracy.”
